Overview

What is the SOS Lamp & Interface?

The SOS Lamp & Interface is a 2-part project featuring a lamp’s light controlled by a mobile interface. The interface controls the lamp’s ON/OFF states and light patterns.

The aim is to explore how lights can be used to communicate light patterns that signal for help.

Goal

People with disabilities need accessible ways to call for help.

PROBLEM

USER PERSONA

Betty, 72

Betty, 72, has retired and currently lives independently in the suburbs of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Betty is deaf and communicates primarily through sign language, and gets around on a wheelchair. Betty is adamant about doing things independently, even when asking for help. She wishes there was a way for her to communicate to others that she needs help, while staying in the comfort of her own home.

Challenges

  • Navigating around the house when her movements are inhibited by a wheelchair

  • Asking for help

Needs

  • A way to communicate for help besides calling or moving to another person’s location

  • Simplicity and as minimal movement as possible to streamline the process
